COVID-19 Crisis

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the green businesses worldwide are facing an unprecedented crisis. As a breeders' association, CIOPORA sees it as a part of its mission to assist its members and their colleagues, specifically but not limited to the area of the association's primary mandate. Please find below the CIOPORA COVID-19 response resources. This page will be continually updated in the coming days and weeks.

COVID-19 Crisis Survey

As a global association of breeders of asexually reproduced horticultural varieties, CIOPORA sees it as a part of its mission to track, evaluate and report on the effect of the 2020 COVID-19 crisis on the green sector in general and the plant breeding companies in particular. This survey aimed at receiving insights into the status quo of the member companies and to correctly assess the immediate needs of the surveyed subsectors for policy recommendations.

Survey framework:

The survey was carried out among the direct and indirect members of CIOPORA between March 31 and April 8, 2020, amid the COVID-19 lockdown. At the time of the survey, about 1/3 of the world’s population was affected by either partial or full lockdown. The lockdown affected the performance of multiple industries taking an especially dramatic toll on the world’s flower and live plant sector with an approximate 80% decrease in demand worldwide.

The survey was carried out online via Google Forms and was disseminated via email among CIOPORA members. 346 industry contacts received the invitation. The participation was voluntary.

Survey demographics:

40 professionals from 38 companies and 17 countries submitted full questionnaires. All surveyed companies are breeders of asexually reproduced horticultural plants, including ornamentals and fruit, although some companies also have their own propagation (nurseries) and/or production sites. CIOPORA received 20 responses from the ornamental and 20 responses from the fruit subsector.
