Starting December 1, Paulo is CIOPORA's new Technical Expert.
With a strong background in plant breeding, phytosanitary matters, and biotechnology, Paulo will support CIOPORA Office in all technical matters pertaining to the advocacy for breeders' rights.
Paulo's professional profile. Born and raised in the actual plant paradise, Costa Rica, Paulo holds a BSc in Biotechnology from the Costa Rica Institute of Technology Cartago, a Laurea Magistrale in International Horticulture from (CIOPORA member!) UNIBO and a Master of Science in Horticulture from the Technical University of Munich. Before joining CIOPORA, Paulo worked as a Senior Researcher at Singapore's famous Gardens by the Bay and as a Biotechnology Superintendent at Fresh Del Monte Produce. On top of these qualifications, he is also a hands-on farmer and a consultant on plant health and pest control.

CIOPORA New Technical Expert
Paulo's Tasks at CIOPORA. Paulo will assist CIOPORA Office and members in all technical matters, including representation at the UPOV TWO, TWF, BMT, and before the Examination Offices. In this area, he will be CIOPORA's coordinator for DUS and other technical matters and will support the work of CIOPORA's Crop Sections and Working Groups. With his knowledge of the plant world, he will inform our advocacy and communications on IP for plants, while building CIOPORA's capacities in the field of variety examination, biotechnology, biodiversity, and phytosanitary issues. He will also help develop CIOPORA's education offerings, such as The CIOPORA Breeding Academy.
