CIOPORA Academy Madrid: A Prelude to Innovation in Plant Breeding

Updated: Nov 3

Join Us for the Midterm Meeting in Madrid

The upcoming CIOPORA Midterm Meeting in Madrid is set to be a pivotal event for plant breeders. This gathering will serve as a prelude to the new version of CIOPORA Academy Madrid, generating a series of activities ahead of Fruit Attraction, one of the sector's main trade fairs.

Madrid, Spain – September 2025 – CIOPORA, the global association for breeders of asexually reproduced horticultural plants, will hold its Midterm Meeting from September 25–26, 2025. This event will bring together members, experts, and stakeholders for two days filled with intellectual exchange, strategic discussions, and valuable networking opportunities.

The timing of this meeting is significant. It occurs just before Fruit Attraction 2025, a leading international trade event for the fruit and vegetable sector. This alignment allows participants to engage in strategic discussions on plant variety protection (PVP) while staying attuned to the commercial pulse of the global horticulture industry.

September 25: A Day for CIOPORA Members

The first day of the Midterm Meeting will focus on internal discussions among CIOPORA members. It will feature sessions addressing evolving legal challenges, tools for plant breeders, and region-specific developments, such as the situation in India. The program includes contributions from legal experts and industry leaders, along with opportunities for networking and exchange.

Key Topics Include:

  • The Private & Non-Commercial Use Exception

  • IP & Non-IP Tools for Breeders

  • Campaigning for IP Awareness

  • Developments in CPVR Evaluation

  • Strategic Focus: India

The evening will conclude with the traditional CIOPORA Dinner, open to both members and invited guests.

The second day will be open to members and invited guests for a full-day IP Public Conference under the theme: “Shaping the Future of IP for Plant Breeders: From Challenges Towards Opportunities.” The agenda includes high-level keynotes and five expert-led panel debates covering critical topics such as:

  • The future of plant breeding under new genomic techniques (NGTs)

  • The evolving horticultural landscape

  • International perspectives on the future of UPOV

  • Lessons from other IPR systems

Networking sessions throughout the day will provide ample opportunities for participants to connect, collaborate, and engage in informal discussions.

Looking Ahead: CIOPORA Academy Madrid

CIOPORA’s educational arm will host the CIOPORA Academy Madrid on September 29, following Fruit Attraction. This full-day workshop will delve into pressing legal and regulatory topics, from changes in global PVP frameworks to EU green marketing regulations and strategies to combat online infringement.
