Dr Jan de Riek Appointed CIOPORA Co-Vice President

September 16, Frankfurt M. - Dr Jan de Riek was appointed CIOPORA Co-Vice President at the latest meeting of the CIOPORA Board. The research group leader at ILVO, the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research, Belgium, Jan is a long-standing CIOPORA Board member. He is the Chairman and the brainpower behind the CIOPORA WorkingGroup Biotechnology and will continue to head the group in the future. At ILVO, Jan focuses on molecular genetics and breeding research in ornamental and agricultural crops. He holds a PhD in plant biotechnology from the University of Gent. CIOPORA Board Meets in Frankfurt, Welcomes ISF & UPOV Guests

September 16-17, Frankfurt M. – for the first time, CIOPORA Board meeting opened doors to external guests, including representatives of ISF and UPOV’s Vice Secretary-General Peter Button, for a discussion on most pressing IP topics. In view of the upcoming UPOV seminar on Essentially Derived Varieties on October 30, discussions in both meetings addressed the interpretation of EDV concept, whereas CIOPORA and ISF agreed on a coordinated lobby effort on this topic. The associations also exchanged information on PBR in China and India and their approaches to advocacy in these countries. EUIPO Releases Case-Law Collection on Online IPR Enforcement

Picture credit: Pixabay September 13 - EUIPO has released an IPR enforcement case-law collection on the liability and obligations of online intermediaries. Underlying that in the online environment IPR infringement may be facilitated by the use of services of intermediary service providers, the collection aims to shed light on the most recent court practice in determining the liability of such intermediaries. The collection contains an array of relevant decisions of the CJEU and national courts, issued between 2016 and the beginning of 2019. Summary In October 2016, a new European Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 (Regulation) on protective measures against plant pests was adopted. The Regulation repeals and replaces seven existing European Directives on harmful organisms. They entered into force on 13 December 2016 and will be directly applicable in all of the EU Member States from 14 December 2019. These new regulations aim to modernise the EU plant health regime, enhancing more effective measures for the protection of the Union's territory and its plants. UPOV Council Approves Nigeria & Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' Draft PVR Laws

August 29 - UPOV has announced that its Council took a positive decision on conformity of the Draft Plant Variety Protection Laws of Nigeria and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines with the 1991 Act of UPOV Convention. If adopted and brought in force without changes, both states can deposit their instruments of accession to UPOV 1991.
